The new STx715 and STx817 series of rugged high performance transistors
designed especially for linear-post-regulation applications, have
just been introduced.
These transistors are available either in SMD SOT-223 and SOT-89
or through-hole TO-92 packages. A key parameter of these transistors
is the excellent power dissipation. For example the STN715 packaged
in SOT-223 exhibits an Rth lower than 78°C/Watt giving optimal
power dissipation for transistors rated up to Ic =1A.
Another important characteristic is the high gain performance
for all collector current requirements up to 1A.
The high gain characteristics offered by the STx715 and STx817
series reduce the input current requirement: as a consequence
the lower input losses help minimize the total power dissipation.
Features
Very low saturation voltage
1A continuous collector current (Ic)
High gain characteristics
Benefits
Cost effective solution
Both through-hole and SMD package options
Excellent design flexibility
Applications
Almost all Consumer and Computer products are equipped with linear
voltage post-regulation to supply the required low voltage bus
(1.8V or 3.3V). Often the need to have these low voltages implies
a high power dissipation that could be a design or cost limitation
for integrated voltage regulators.
The STx715 and STx817 transistors result in an optimal choice
from both a technical and economic point of view. Even for low
power dissipation requirements and when no specific precision
is requested (generally > ± 4%), these bipolar devices
can be a cost-effective alternative.
