| The importance of ESD protection is now widely acknowledged and
adopted by designers of portable devices. It is well known that
the ESD phenomenon is unpredictable and can have different consequences
in various environments. Designers are always looking for flexible
ESD protection devices that can be put wherever needed. ST’s
new single line ESD protection devices provide a high level of protection
and design flexibility while being highly cost-effective. |

The ESDALC6V1-1xx2 series are low capacitance ESD protection diodes
in ultra small SMD plastic
packages designed to protect one signal line from the damage caused
by ESD and other transients. |

| Performance |
When selecting ESD protection solutions, the protection efficiency
is always of primary concern. As a rule of thumb, ESD diodes should
be put as close as possible to the entry point of ESD surges. |

|
| |
| ST’s single line ESD protection device is designed to meet
various design requirements, especially in some specific applications
like keypads in portable devices. The keypad is a large area with
multiple and distributed contact points that are susceptible to
ESD discharges. |
|
Typical application schematic of single
line ESD protection.
When an ESD surge strikes an I/O port, the ESD diode
diverts the instantaneous over-current to the ground and
clamps the over-voltage to a safe level (Vout) |
| |
| When a +15kV ESD discharge is applied on the input side of ESDALC6V1-1M2,
the remaining voltage on the output side, (Vout) is 21V maximum,
and less than 10V after 20ns, which means excellent ESD protection
performance and efficiency. In comparison, in other solutions like
varistors the remaining voltage will reach more than 150V. In addition,
ST’s ESD diodes provide other advantages over varistors, such
as lower leakage current, faster response time and higher reliability. |

| Space saving |
ST's single line ESD protection devices are housed in the newest
SOD882 package, which is a two I/O pin micro package occupying only
0.6mm2 PCB space. Along with the trend of slim and super slim mobile
phones, the newest thin SOD882 package is available with a thickness
of 0.4mm max. |
