powerSPIN™ Evolutionary Revolutions:
A Monolithic Motor Control ICs Platform

powerSPIN™: evolutionary revolutions

powerSPINDesigned taking full benefit of ST's BCDIIIs diffusion technology - a mixed signal power technology with 1um feature size that enable the integration of Bipolar transistors and diodes, CMOS for logic and D shaped Power DMOS - powerSPIN™ is truly a product platform.
Any member of the family gives a much optimized solution to motor control systems for those who need cost effectiveness and superior performances at system level but do not want - or cannot - enter into an ASIC design.

Platform approach
Platform approach

powerSPIN™ is essentially based on an Control core, that includes all logic and analog circuitry, that actually manage the specified physical variable (i.e. current, speed) in a fashion that best suits the specific needs of very different motor types - Stepper, Brushed DC and Three Phase Brushless.
The control core includes also all the protection sensing and processing blocks (i.e. Under Voltage, Over Temperature, Over Current) and the optimized buffer stages devoted to properly drive the 60V rated integrated Power MOS. These latter are arranged into arrays of either 8 - four high side and four low side - or six - 3 high side and three low side. Both bridge topologies are provided with two different DMOS sizes - with Rdson at 0.73ohm and 0.3ohm - then perfectly fitting two Current Ratings Ranges - 1.4Arms and 2.8Arms.

powerSPIN™: a family with that grows
Wide product spectrum

The approach used to design powerSPIN™, have enabled the generation of an extremely wide product spectrum - to date made of 10 different products each available with three package options! - that differ one from the other by the tiny slice that could make the difference - in terms of superior cost performance ratio - into your own motor control system.

Extremely wide current ratings coverage

Wide current ratings coverageQuite obviously, what matters too is the ability to have a Power section that can be tailored to fairly match the actual current ratings - and/or allowed dissipation - dictated by the specific application.
To this extent, the combination of the two different Power MOS classes together with the possibility - with some of the products - of paralleling the different sections further reducing the on resistance and then boosting current capability, gives system designer a great deal of freedom. Combining this with the possibility to select among three package options - Dual In Line, Small Outline Plastic and ST's PowerSO, a real Power SMD package - makes possible to cover a range of application condition that is really unsurpassed.

Your Time to Market matters to us…
...and we realize your times are tight. To help you selecting and evaluate all the good we brought into our powerSPIN platform, and let you get full benefits out of it we have put together practiSPIN™. What is this about? practiSPIN is an integrated evaluation environment that gives system designer the chance to have his own motor driven with the appropriate powerSPIN product with his own current and speed profile settings in a matter of minutes. All this while getting a substantial help in answering to fundamental question about viability of the identified solution, with special regards to thermal management issues.
practiSPIN

The environment consists of a set of product specific Evaluation Boards that can get connected to the PC serial input through a microcontroller (ST7) based Interface board. The whole is governed by a window based Graphic User Interface, that supports all the capability of the tool. Evaluation Boards and Interface Board can be ordered through your ST sales representative, while the practiSPIN software can be downloaded here.
