Nowadays there is a trend for supply
voltages to migrate to lower levels
to support low-power, high performance
applications. While some devices are
capable of operating at lower voltages,
other devices might not have the same
capability. This calls for logic level
translation to interface the separately
powered components of a system. |
The ST2G3236 is a dual supply low voltage
CMOS 2-bit bus transceiver fabricated with
submicron silicon gate and five-layer metal
wiring C2MOS technology. Designed for use
as an interface between a 3.3V bus and a 2.5V
or 1.8V bus in mixed 3.3V/1.8V, and 2.8V/1.8V
supply systems, it achieves high speed operation
while maintaining the CMOS low power dissipation.
This device is intended for a two-way asynchronous
communication between data buses and the direction
of data transmission is determined by DIR
inputs. The A-port interfaces with the higher
voltage bus while the B-port interfaces with
the lower voltage bus. A logic high/low on
one input port appears as a logic high/low
on the opposite output port without logic
inversion.
In applications where only single direction
translation is required, the DIR pins can
be tied to ground or VCC accordingly. While
in bi-directional applications, the DIR pins
can be controlled using the DIR through GPIO.

ST will soon expand the level translator’s
portfolio with a new series of 2-bit level translators
with autodirection sensing. Thanks to a special
circuitry to sense the input, direction control
will no longer be required, thus eliminating
the need of any General Purpose Input/Output
(GPIO) control.
