This is a 150 W auxiliary power supply dual output SMPS using the L5991 PWM driver and an emitter switched bipolar transistor (ESBT) as a main switch.
Since almost all auxiliary power supplies are based on flyback converters, the need for a blocking voltage as high as 1500 V and over, coupled with high switching frequency operations, make ESBT the perfect choice for auxiliary power supplies.
The need to handle both high output power and a wide input voltage range leads to the design of a flyback stage which works in mixed operation mode: discontinuous and continuous.
Thanks to the L5991 PWM, the converter is able to operate in mixed mode. For higher power levels with a switching frequency in the 90 kHz range, the converter operates in continuous current mode (CCM), while in standby and for power levels lower than 25 W, the converter works in discontinuous current mode (DCM) at a switching frequency of about 35 kHz. |
