Abstract
In cellular mobile radio systems, determining the speed of the mobile is of essential importance for the optimization of receiver algorithms. The speed estimation value can be used for the control of the channel estimation, the adaptation of the power control algorithm, or determination of the quality of the link. Existing methods for the speed estimation for mobile radio systems are either very complex or the estimation results are only very coarse. Our paper reviews a new method for estimating the speed of a mobile wireless terminal using the normalized autocovariance of the power of the received signal, allowing us to overcome the limitations of existing methods. We also propose a speed estimation algorithm based on this method, evaluating it by simulation.
