Galileo-Ready Positioning Terminal Program

Galileo European Satellite Navigation System

galileo program   Galileo is the European program of civil radio-navigation by satellite, sponsored by The European Union and the European Space Agency (ESA). The aim of this project is to create an independent satellite navigation system fully compatible and interoperable with the American GPS, but featuring a more precise and continuous signal.

Galileo program is based on an international co-operation, which has the objective to create a worldwide system, able to assure accessibility also to non-European users, even in places where there is no ground infrastructure.

The global accessibility is guaranteed also by the compatibility of the European system with the American GPS system: users of different countries will have the possibility to process both GPS and GALILEO signals with a single receiver.

Galileo is based on a constellation of 30 satellites and ground stations providing information concerning the positioning of users or objects; these satellite signals can also be combined with other systems (as Glonass, GPS or non-GNSS systems, as GSM and UMTS) to allow enhanced services for specific applications.

Galileo-Ready POSitionning TERminal (GR-POSTER)

STMicroelectronics has been involved in this European project for its long and successful experience in GPS chipsets design and manufacturing; it is the main contractor and semiconductor partner of the GR-POSTER (Galileo-Ready POSitioning TERminal) Consortium, constituted by Galileo Joint Undertaking to develop a Localization Based System (LBS) for mass market.

The other members of the consortium are:
- Alenia Spazio
- Deimos Space
- China Aerospace Science & Technology Corporation
- GCT Global Consulting Touch Iberica
- Istituto Superiore Mario Boella
- Magneti Marelli Systemes Electroniques

Goals of GR-POSTER project

Provide “Galileo-Readiness” in the next chipsets and terminals to be produced, with a focus to Mass market cost-optimization (single-chip receiver feasibility)
Create a Flexible Receiver Platform, compatible with Galileo signal and re-programmable for maximum flexibility, to be used in GR-POSTER (and in future projects) to anticipate Galileo compatibility of future generations of Mass Market Terminals

Applications of Galileo Receiver Platform

Galileo Receiver Platform is especially conceived for:
Automotive Terminals (Car Navigation, Vehicle Terminals, etc)
Handheld Terminals (Cellular Phones, PDAs, etc)
